Are You Interested in Using Your Musical Ability to Lead in Praise and Worship?
We Don't Lead Songs of Praise and Worship, We Lead Praise and Worship in Song
This is not meant to be a clever trick of semantics. The goal of the praise and worship team, including the musicians, is to not be song leaders but praise and worship leaders.
Everyone on stage is a praise and worship leader. This doesn't mean that everyone sings or speaks, but God has put the team on stage to be seen and to lead. Whether rhythmically providing the heartbeat of the melody at the trapset, chasing that arpeggiation on your instrument or front and center delivering the vocal leadership of the melody, it is a wonderful and mighty calling to lead God's people in guided prayer through song!
This is not meant to frighten, but just to be clear. We are not a cover band. We are the little drummer boy asking "Shall I play my drum for Him?" We are the ones to lay our offering before the Lord first, and in so doing, are all under a microscope. It is a responsibility for certain, but it is a tremendous joy as well!
Can't Read Music? No Problem!
Neither can I (BJ)! We play from something called lead sheets. Below is an example of what that is.

How I (BJ) Direct the Worship Team
As the worship director, it is my responsibility to make sure the music serves the congregation, allowing them to express their praise and worship. I seek to achieve this by doing two things: 1) I choose the music and the purpose it serves in the guided prayer of the song service, and 2) I serve the leaders of that song, who take the notes and words from paper and make it into musical praise and worship.
I will cast the vision of the song and ask the singers and musicians to use their gifts to achieve the goal. While I do encourage growth in the team and often add concrete ideas here and there, I am not leading a musical piece or reenacting someone else's music. You play your instrument the way God gifted you to play, I simply guide us along to achieve the purpose of the prayer.
Finally, I understand just how important and priceless time is. It is very important to respect the time of everyone on the Worship Team. We have two practices for every service. On Thursday Night from 7:00-8:00 we get a feel for the songs so that we have a few days to work on them on our own and then on Sunday Morning from 8:00-9:00 we get them perfected for service.
We Would Love for You to Sing or Play!
